Rookie Randy Foye Wins The Battle With Gilbert Arenas

One of the most important aspects in the growth of rookie players is how quickly they develop the ability to stand up to big time players. In a game like NBA basketball, confidence is everything and once a player has that confidence, knowing he can play with anyone in the league, their productivity begins to skyrocket.

Pretty good article. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying Foye wins the battle. Arenas played so absolutely terrible that Foye "won it" by default. Just one thing I wanted to point out:

"Yet, in this game, Foye was fantastic in the first quarter. From the tip, the rookie accepted the challenge of Arenas and was able to dish out five assists in the first 8 ½ minutes"

- So, Foye only had 3 assists during the rest of the game? Umm... I expect a little more from our starting PG.

Anyhow, we all know about the Wizard's travel difficulties. Also, you forgot to mention that the Wizards played without two of their three best players, Butler and Jamison. Those factors cost them the game, even though they played terrible and we didn't do a whole lot to take control against a decimated team. I know almost every player in the nba and I hadn't heard of like three of their guys lol...

Hey College,

There was a reason I didn't mention that Butler and Jamison didn't play. That was not the focus of the article.

Yes, Arenas played terribly (mostly due to being tired from their exhausting trip, like I mentioned), but when Foye was guarding Arenas a large majority of the time one-on-one, you do have to give the rookie SOME credit.

As far as Foye only having 3 assists after the first 8 1/2 minutes...he was scoring the ball. The defense changed their approach, staying at home on their man, allowing Foye to get his shots.

This is what he needs to do to be effective.

Stephen,

You're right, he deserves more credit than I am giving him. I just tend to get a little cynical after such a disappointing season with all the high expectation I had going in.

He certainly did play much better on Arenas than one more guard did (James) and better than the other possibly could have (Hudson.)

As for your point about the assists, yeah, that makes sense. I guess I'm just not sold on Foye running the point. He looks far more comfortable as a SG and often looks discombobulated running the point. I dunno, maybe it's just me though...

To be honest, I'm not sold on Foye as a point guard either. However, I am trying to stay as positive as possible and see the growth in his game and note it when improvement has been shown.

I guess we just have to hope for Foye to develope. I just don't see it happening soon enough to appease KG... and we all know what he said on Friday............

P.S. What the hell was up with that Lynx player winning the US Bank giveaway?!?!? LAME. hahahaha
