It All Starts Tomorrow Against Washington For the Wolves

The All-Star break is over and it is now time to get back to business. The Timberwolves begin the final push for the playoffs with a record of 25-27 and are barely holding on to their current eighth and final playoff spot. Question marks surround this team, mainly circling around 10-time All-Star Kevin Garnett and his future in Minnesota if the Timberwolves miss out on the playoffs for the third straight season.

The remainder of Minnesota’s season can be broken down into three equally important parts. The first starts tomorrow when they travel to Washington for the first game out of the All-Star break and ends March 2 at home against Utah. In this ten-day stretch, the Timberwolves will face four current division leaders in a total of five games.

Washington, who leads the Southeast division will host the Wolves Tuesday and also make their lone appearance at the Target Center on February 25. Phoenix, who leads the Pacific division with a 39-12 record, will certainly be looking for payback, as the Wolves are one of the few teams to defeat the Suns this season. Dallas, who leads the Southwest division along with their NBA-best record of 44-9, will make a Twin Cities appearance on February 27. Finally, the Utah Jazz, who lead the same conference in which the Wolves play—the Northwest division—will also make a Twin Cities appearance on March 2.

After that tough stretch of games, the season does not get any easier for Minnesota. Starting March 4 in Boston, KG and crew will play 8 of the next 10 games on the road. This trip includes stops against the defending champion Miami Heat, a match-up with Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers and the reigning two-time MVP Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns in Arizona.

The final phase of the remainder of the season starts March 25 against Portland when Minnesota will play 9 of their final 14 games at home. This will certainly be the determining factor of whether or not the Wolves will make a playoff appearance, but with games against LeBron James and the Cavaliers, the only Target Center appearance for the Miami Heat, the Mavericks making their final appearance of the season and the San Antonio Spurs all in that stretch, Minnesota will have their work cut out for them.

This season could get quite exciting from now until the playoffs…or it could get very depressing very quickly. Either way, it all starts tomorrow night against All-Stars Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler in Washington.

Stay tuned.
